Key Stage 3 – Years 7 and 8

Our current scheme of work covers the four main areas of the National Curriculum (Number, Algebra, geometry and measures and Data Handling) and ranges from levels 2 to 8.

We also include many enrichment activities, investigations and projects during the course of the year.

Each pupil is aware of their end of year target and these, along with their progress are sent home each half term.

Internal examinations take place during each half term, where pupils’ performance and ability are formally assessed and recorded; with possible set changes made at the end of term.

Once a half term pupils will receive a mathematics ILA. This is in the form of a leveled workbook; pupils are directed to suitable tasks based on their attainment. These activities encourage independent thinking and perseverance. The ILA’s are then revisited following an initial marking for pupils to make improvements based on the advice given.

Pupils in all year groups are given the opportunity take part in the Junior Maths Challenge© where individual and team honours can be achieved.

Key Stage 4 – Years 9, 10 and 11

In Key Stage 4 students study the EdExcel Linear Syllabus for an award in GCSE Mathematics. This consists of two final paper examinations.

GCSE is taken in two tiers, Higher and Foundation.

Students sitting the Higher exam have access to grades A* – C.

Students sitting the Foundation exam have access to grades C – G.

Key Stage 5 – Years 12 and 13

Entry Requirements

Mathematics – 5 higher level GCSEs to include Mathematics at grade A or above.

Further Mathematics – 5 higher level GCSEs to include Mathematics at grade A or above.

Use of Mathematics – 5 higher level GCSEs to include Mathematics at grade C or above (higher paper).

 

Brief Outline of Courses:

Mathematics

In year 12 students will study two core modules C1 and C2, and an applied module D1. Assessment for each module is by a 90 minute written exam worth 75 marks. Each module is equally weighted at 16.6%

Students can cash in for an AS level in Mathematics at the end of year 12 with 3 modules, or continue until the end of year 13 for a full A level with 6 modules. Those continuing into Year 13 will study two further core modules, C3 and C4, and another applied module, either M1 or S1. Again, assessment for each module is by a 90 minute written exam worth 75 marks. Each module is equally weighted at 16.6%

D1 is an especially useful foundation module for any student who will have to make quantitative decisions at some point during their career.

M1 is more suitable for students taking Physics or Technology. The mathematics of forces and movement.

S1 is more suitable for students taking Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Psychology or Business Studies.

Summary of the Specification Content

C1 – Algebra and functions; coordinate geometry in the (x,y) plane; sequences and series; differentiation; integration.

C2 – Algebra and functions; coordinate geometry in the (x,y) plane; sequences and series; trigonometry; exponentials and logarithms; differentiation; integration.

C3 – Algebra and functions; trigonometry; exponentials and logarithms; differentiation; numerical methods.

C4 – Partial fractions; Coordinate geometry; The Binomial expansion; Vectors; Integration.

Further Mathematics

The Further Mathematics course can be taken alongside the Mathematics course. It builds on and expands the work covered in Mathematics.

Students take the following modules.

In year 12

FP1. Students learn to calculate with complex numbers, matrices and series.

M1 is more suitable for students taking Physics or Technology. The mathematics of forces and movement.

S2. A module that builds on content covered in Statistics 1 in Mathematics. How to analyse data.

In year 13

FP2. This module builds on Further Pure 1 with more complex numbers and differential equations.

M2. This module builds on Mechanics 2 looking at forces and movement in more detail.

D2. A module that builds on content covered in Decision 1 in Mathematics. The mathematics of networks.
