Performing & Creative Arts

Curriculum Intent

Drama and Dance

In Drama and Dance we learn about the role of the arts in our society and study the techniques, genres and ideas of influential theatre and Dance practitioners. By analysing existing plays, choreography and devising new performances, we learn life skills such as dealing with conflict, appreciating individuality and recognising moral dilemmas. Students are actively encouraged  to use their imagination and form opinions of the culture around them. In Drama and Dance, we value innovative thinking and aim to build core skills of communication, confidence and compromise. Above all, we put creativity at the heart of all we do.

Music

In music we aim to develop the innate musical ability that is within every child. Students are given the ability to explore music written by different composers from different eras and for different purposes. As music is central to so many religious, cultural and social experiences it is important that students are given the chance to explore as many different styles as possible and appreciate how it works. At its core all music of any genre or era can be broken down into the basic elements of music and we help students to understand this through a practical approach which includes performing, listening and composing. They learn to read basic musical notation so that they are able to translate this into a performance. Through this practical approach to music students gain invaluable core skills of communication, teamwork, resilience and confidence. They learn to listen to their own music of choice with a new perspective and open them up to new musical experiences.

Art

We believe that Art is a subject that can help us to understand and give meaning to the world in which we live. Art effects everyone’s lives and as such is an extremely valuable subject. We support our students to aspire through their learning experiences to standards of excellence intellectually, practically, and aesthetically. The curriculum we provide is rich in skills and knowledge. Through our curriculum, we aim to provide students with an experience that is exciting and to ensure that our students combine practical skills with creative thinking, developing highly valuable and transferrable skills for future careers and life. Through our art curriculum, students are taught not only how to use formal elements within their art work such as line, tone, colour, space, texture etc., but to also analyse how formal elements are used as powerful communication tools to create effect. Students experience a variety of media, techniques and processes over their studies. In KS3 students will develop their skills and understanding with progressive complexity and sophistication, so that they are able to make informed choices and work with increasing independence into Key Stages 4 and 5. We support students in learning to co-operate and negotiate and be able to share good practice and learn from others. We actively promote looking at the work of others, celebrating other cultures and encouraging diversity. We develop students’ awareness of the impact of art on society and expect them to achieve by applying a variety of skills from the wider curriculum together with those specific to Art to produce effective and considered artworks.
